Let’s start with the good news: infectious diseases are declining around the world. That short statement packs in a lot of positive developments, including that the average lifespan is lengthening and people are generally healthier. The bad news? Now that the scourges of childhood have been beaten back, the illnesses of the aged are emerging. Chronic (persistent or long-lasting) diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, are on the rise, turning patterns of illness on their head.
